MESA, Ariz. -- Police officers caught a man and woman stealing property from a foreclosed home in Mesa Monday night.

At approximately 10 p.m., Mesa police received a report of suspicious activity around an abandoned home near 58th Street and Broadway Road.

According to Mesa police Detective Steve Berry, the responding officer saw a man and woman exiting the home carrying a basket filled with property.

The officer gave verbal commands to the suspects and the woman complied and was taken into custody while the man ran back inside the house.

Other officers were called and set up a perimeter around the house. The male suspect exited the home and was taken into custody.

According to Berry, the house had been repossessed by a bank and there were No Trespassing signs posted on the property. The home reportedly was secure before the suspects broke in through the front security door.

Berry said Timothy J. Artoff, 51, and Kimberly K. Baumann, 48, admitted to entering the home to remove the property. He said they also admitted to knowing they were committing burglary and criminal trespass by entering the home.

Artoff and Baumann reportedly admitted that they did not know who owned the home but knew it was abandoned and filled with property.

Aftoff told officers that his white 1991 Ford Bronco was parked at a friend's home around the corner. The owners of the home advised officers that they knew Artoff and allowed him to park his vehicle in their driveway. The Bronco was found parked in the driveway and had what appeared to be property from the vacant home.
