1 Wounded when fight outside bar ends in shootingPosted: Updated:
PHOENIX -- A man who drove himself to a gas station for help after being shot is in the hospital this morning.
According to investigators, a fight broke out in front of a bar near 51st Avenue and McDowell Road at about 1 a.m.
"It was just a verbal altercation as far as we know," said Sgt. Michelle Thiry of the Phoenix Police Department. "From statements that we have from people, it sounds like there was probably some alcohol involved."
Police said somebody who was involved in that fight jumped into an SUV and started doing doughnuts, allegedly trying to hit people in the Food City parking lot. That driver reportedly ended up dragging one person and running over another person's foot.
According to investigators, one of the people in the parking lot opened fire on the driver. There were at least three bullet holes in the vehicle's windshield.
The driver was hit at least once. He drove across 51st Avenue to a Circle K where witnesses called the police.
The driver's condition was not immediately available, but his injuries reportedly were not life threatening.
The person who pulled the trigger has been cooperating with police and is not in custody at this point. Investigators are trying to determine if that person acted in self defense.
