Cab driver shot dead in Central Phoenix, 2 suspects on the loosePosted: Updated:
PHOENIX -- Police are searching a Central Phoenix neighborhood for two suspects in a deadly early morning shooting that looks like it started with a robbery.
Officers were called to the neighborhood near 16th Street and Osborn Road at about 4:30 a.m.
Once on the scene, they found the driver of an El Sol Taxi Service had been shot and killed. He was in the front seat of his cab and his money bag was in his lap. The victim has been identified by police as Jose Jesus Lopez-Guzman, 57.
Police said the money bag was open. That leads them to believe robbery was the motive for the shooting.
Witnesses reported seeing two people running from the area shortly after the shots were fired. The suspects were seen getting into a white SUV, possibly a Pathfinder, a Trailblazer or a Bronco. Investigators believe there was a driver waiting in the vehicle, which was last seen heading west.
No other suspect information was immediately available.
Co-workers tell 3TV the victim was the father of six and had been driving for the El Sol Taxi Service for about 16 years. They said he had likely just started his shift this morning and probably only had about $20 -- just enough to make change -- in his money bag.
If you know anything about this fatal shooting, please call the Phoenix Police Department.
