ADOT celebrates 20th anniversary of Deck Park tunnelPosted: Updated:
PHOENIX -- The Arizona Department of Transportation is celebrating a major milestone today as the Interstate 10 Deck Park tunnel in Central Phoenix is 20 years old today.
That section of I-10 was the final mile of the freeway in the entire country.
Back in 1990, about 80,000 went through the tunnel, which is actually a series of bridges with a park built on top, each day. Today, that number is more than 200,000.
Every few months, ADOT has to close the tunnel for a weekend to replace burnt-out light bulbs, there are more than 3,000 lights in the tunnel, and clean soot off the tiles. That generally happens three or four times per year.
