Sheriff Joe Arpaio faces jeering protesters in San DiegoPosted: Updated:
SAN DIEGO -- Maricopa County Sheriff Joe Arpaio, the 78-year-old ex-federal drug agent known for his Arizona immigration sweeps and tent city lockups, faced jeering protesters in San Diego before speaking to a conservative group about his law enforcement
tactics in Phoenix.
Arpaio went outside before Tuesday's noon speech at the Country Club of Rancho Bernardo, where about 150 demonstrators had gathered. Arpaio says he wanted to exchange ideas, what he called a dialogue, but protesters didn't want to hear it.
They chanted "Stop the hate" and "Down with Arpaio."
Inside, Arpaio told a friendly audience of more than 200 that many illegal immigrants he arrests are heading to California and he suggested the governor send him thank-you note for grabbing them in Arizona.
