Wildcat D must prove itself despite Thorpe nominationPosted: Updated:
The Arizona football team only returns four starters on defense. One of them, junior Cornerback Trevin Wade, getting some preseason publicity.
Wade's been named a candidate for the Jim Thorpe award, given to the nation's top defensive back. The field of 35 will eventually be narrowed to three finalists by late November. Wade, a junior, started all 13 games last season. He has nine interceptions in two seasons with the 'Cats. Former Wildcat Antoine Cason won the award in 2007.
Arizona opens practice on Thursday and despite the fact that the 'Cats return only four defensive starters, Head Coach Mike Stoops is confident about that side of the ball. But his players will have to back that up if they want to make a run at the Pac-10 title.
