Deadly month for immigrants crossing the AZ desertPosted: Updated:
TUCSON, Ariz. -- July was an extremely busy month for the Pima County Medical Examiner.
The office said it handled 59 bodies of suspected illegal immigrants who tried to cross the baking southern Arizona desert.
The total ranks second only to the 69 deaths recorded in July 2005.
The medical examiner was forced to bring in a 55-foot refrigerated trailer to house some of the bodies.
Chief medical examiner Dr. Bruce Parks tells the Arizona Daily Star the body count filled the medical examiner's two refrigerated storage spaces.
Since 2001, the Medical Examiner's Office has handled the bodies of more than 1,650 illegal border crossers found on the Tohono
O'odham Nation, and in Pima, Santa Cruz and Pinal counties.
