Dozens of Arizona Army Guard troops deploy to AfghanistanPosted: Updated:
PHOENIX -- Forty-three Soldiers from the 1-158th Infantry of the Arizona Army National Guard deployed Tuesday morning from the Pettycrew Armory in Phoenix to supplement the Massachusetts Army National Guard's 1st Battalion, 181st Infantry.
The Arizona Guardsmen, all individual augmentees, are deploying in support of Operation Enduring Freedom. The combined unit will first go to Camp Atterbury, Ind. for 30 to 45 days of training prior to departing for Afghanistan.
This combined unit will perform two primary missions in Afghanistan -- the majority of Soldiers are expected to form security force platoons for provisional reconstruction teams while the remainder of the troops will manage and provide provincial oversight from a forward operating base.
Soldiers of the 1-158 Infantry are from Anthem, Avondale, Bellemont, Chino Valley, El Mirage, Flagstaff, Gilbert, Glendale, Laveen, Mesa, Peoria, Phoenix, Queen Creek, Scottsdale, Surprise, and Tucson.
