Arizona inmate escapee capturedPosted: Updated:
PHOENIX (AP) -- An Arizona prison inmate who escaped from a work crew earlier this month has been captured.
Arizona Department of Corrections officials say Lonnie Smith was found Thursday night at a mobile home in Wittman.
DOC officials say Smith had been at a minimum-security prison in Douglas and was scheduled to be released in June 2012. He now has been transferred to a maximum-security unit at the state prison in Florence.
Smith left the work crew at the Huachuca City Landfill on July 8 in a city-owned vehicle that still had its keys in the ignition. He had been in prison since March 5 after a conviction for drug paraphernalia violation and misconduct involving a weapon.
DOC officials say Smith was previously imprisoned in Arizona in 1996 for theft and forgery convictions.
