PHOENIX -- One person is dead after an early morning accident in the area of 11th Avenue and Van Buren Street in Phoenix.

According to police it happened at about 5 a.m. when a maintenance worker arrived at University Park to treat the pool.

While they are still piecing together the details, investigators believe two people -- possibly transients --  jumped the fence and made their way into the park either late Thursday night or early Friday morning. The worker told police the park's gate was locked when he got there.

The worker said he was backing his truck to the pool when he felt a bump. He pulled forward and got out of his truck to discover he had run over one of the transients as he slept on the roadway leading to the pool area. The other person was not hurt.

The driver called 911.

The transient, who has not been identified, was rushed to the hospital where he later died.

Police are talking to the driver of the truck, who was quite shaken up. Officers are also talking to the other individual who allegedly jumped the fence.

Police do not believe impairment was a factor in the accident, but the incident is under investigation.
