Tempe Town Lake surveillance video shows dam breakPosted: Updated:
TEMPE, Ariz. -- When the dam burst at Tempe Town Lake Tuesday night, it was captured on surveillance video and Tempe Police were flooded with 911 calls. This video report shows surveillance video taken at the actual time of the dam break and includes 911 calls from residents and passers-by who reported the break.
One of the four 16-foot tall rubber bladders broke shortly before 10:00 p.m. Tuesday night. It is believed that the failure was caused by prolonged exposure to 100 degree-plus temperatures that are common this time of year in the Phoenix area.
Mayor Hugh Hallman said Tempe Town Lake could be closed until November as crews begin reparing the broken dam. Meanwhile, area residents and officials are preparing for the ecological impact of the ruptured dam, which could affect the area for years to come.
