MARICOPA, Ariz. -- A lightning strike caused a hay fire in Maricopa Wednesday morning.

At approximately 10 a.m., fire crews responded to a report of a fire one mile southwest of the 38000 block of West Cowtown Road in Maricopa.

According to Brad Pitassi with the Maricopa Fire Department, crews found a large pile of hay approximately 50 feet long, 50 feet wide and 20 feet high fully engulfed in flames.

Fire crews worked with the employees on the property to break up the pile using bulldozers and other heavy equipment and the fire was quickly contained.

Pitassi said the fire was the result of a witnessed lightning strike from a morning storm.
