Jo Ann Reyes, SW Fair Housing Council, says fair housing g laws give everyone the right to live wherever they choose and can afford. Wednesday, Reyes says it prohibits discrimination based on race, color, sex, disability, etc. She says all types of housing is included in the law, from single family homes to apartments to mobile homes. She says the Council has two locations in Nogales where people can contact if they feel they’ve been a victim of housing discrimination. During Thursday's interview, Reyes says if a realtor or rental agent has refused to sell, rent or show you available housing, you may be a victim of housing discrimination. She says laws prevent landlords, sellers, lenders and insurance agents from discriminating against you. She says housing discrimination is still quite common, adding the Council offers such services as investigation, initiating complaints and conducting education and outreach. On Friday's show, Reyes says the Council works to ensure fair housing by providing a variety of services directed toward education and enforcement. She says these services include conferences, training programs and seminars to inform housing professionals about fair housing laws. She says the Council also informs and advises community residents of their fair housing rights.
