Arizona immigration law generating conflicts within parties

Posted: Updated:

Shortly after Governor Brewer signed SB 1070 into law, Arizona Congressman Raul Grijalva called on all businesses and civic organizations to boycott the state of Arizona. Grijalva's actions made a lot of republicans angry.  Some democrats are also speaking out against the boycott.

"I have some real problems with the law.  I find that the law is divisive," says Congresswoman Gabrielle Giffords.

It probably isn't surprising to hear democrat legislators speaking out against Arizona's new immigration law.

"It does absolutely nothing to secure the U.S.-Mexico border and that precisely is the problem," Giffords continues.

Congresswoman Giffords spoke with members of the Hispanic chamber of commerce about the law Thursday morning during a speech about border security. She's just as frustrated about the law as she is about the federal government's criticism of Arizona because of it, "But, if the Federal Government had been doing it's job we wouldn't be here in the first place - no lawsuit, no SB 1070."

But the Congresswoman has other frustrations with the law, "SB 1070 has resulted in a variety of problems, one of those, is this call for the boycott."

Congressman Raul Grijalva, called for that boycott against Arizona, shortly after governor Jan Brewer signed SB 1070 into law. Wednesday, Attorney General Terry Goddard wrote a letter to the congressman, voicing his frustration

I am writing to request that you help protect Arizona jobs by withdrawing your support for a boycott. Our state needs the capital to put us back on our feet. From what i have seen, the governor and legislature don't seem to care about Arizona's economic life blood. I ask you to join with me in calling on businesses across America to give Arizona a chance.

"Boycotts are punishing people and businesses that have absolutely nothing to do with the passage of SB 1070,"

Democrats expressing frustration over their fellow democrats actions hasn't been the norm, until now. Congressman Grijalva responded Thursday to Attorney General Goddard's letter.

I hope governor brewer got a similar letter asking her to tone down her vicious comments. I understand why Mr. Goddard sent this letter, but I'm not the source of his problems.

The State of Arizona is facing multiple lawsuits over SB 1070, including one filed by the Department of Justice.
