GILBERT, Ariz. – A woman and her boyfriend were found dead on the Fourth of July in what police believe was a murder suicide.

Police in Gilbert were called to the Hampton Inn at 3265 S. Market Street on July 4 at about 1:30 p.m. When officers arrived, they found 32-year-old Cynthia Townley dead from a gunshot wound.

The investigation led officers to a home in the area near Queen Creek and Cooper Road in Chandler. Officers discovered Townley’s 36-year-old boyfriend, identified as Christopher Harbinson, dead in the backyard of his house on Monday morning. He died as a result of a self-inflicted gunshot wound.

Staff at the Hampton Inn called police when a housekeeper found Townley’s body in one of the rooms. Police have determined she was a victim of homicide.

Police say Townley and Harbinson checked into the hotel room about one week ago.

Detectives say Townley was killed between the night of July 3 and the afternoon of July 4.
