Q. I’m having a problem getting the pictures from my digital camera to my computer. I’ve tried several different programs, but nothing seems to work. Do you have any suggestions, Mr. M?
A. Most digital cameras arrive with software that is supposed to help move your pictures from the camera to the computer. The truth is, I have yet to use any applications that came with my digital cameras because they're not generally needed to move photos to the computer. You can do that within Windows itself by first connecting your camera to your computer using whatever method is provided. You may have a cable or if your camera uses a flash memory card, insert that in its mini-drive or reader.
Double-click Computer (or My Computer, depending on the version of Windows being used) so that your various drive icons are displayed. Double-click the drive letter for your digital camera. It will probably display "Removable Disk," followed by the drive letter.
Double click the next folder shown, probably labeled DCIM, which is short for Digital Camera IMages, then double-click the folder containing your photos. With your photo filenames displayed, press CTRL + A to select (highlight) all of them, then right-click and select COPY or press CTRL + C.
Close the window you’re working in, then go to your My Pictures folder, or any other folder in which you want to place your photos. Right-click the folder and choose PASTE or press CTRL + V.
Once you confirm that your images are safely ensconced in a folder on your hard drive, you can then organize them into other sub-folders, if you wish, edit them, rename them, or delete them. At that point, you can also delete them from your camera, freeing up memory for additional photos.
If you prefer to use a separate program for moving pictures from the camera to the computer, Google’s Picasa (http://picasa.google.com) is very popular, free, and easy to use.
Q. When I attempt to shut down or restart my computer, it appears like it’s going through the normal shutdown or restart routine, but it never actually shuts down or restarts. The screen goes dark, but the fan, lights, everything else remains on. What can I do to fix this so the darned thing just shuts down?
A. The actions of your On/Off power switch are controlled by a setting in the Control Panel, so go to your Control Panel > Power Options > Advanced tab. In the drop-down menu, under “When I press the power button on my computer:" select Shut Down, followed by Apply > OK. (Windows 7 users, go to Control Panel > Hardware and Sound > Power Options. On the left, click “Choose What the Power Buttons Do,” and make the same selection referenced above.
