TUCSON -- A vehicle heading south on First Avenue at a high rate of speed lost control and slammed into a bus stop bench injuring six.

It happened about 10:45 Friday morning on the southwest corner of First Avenue and Fort Lowell.

Eyewitnesses told Fox 11 Reporter Kevin Adger that the vehicle went through the intersection at a high rate of speed and seemed to be out of control.  It left the street, sheared off a fire hydrant, and slammed into the bench.  Several people were waiting at the bus stop.  A few were pinned under the bench after the collision.

Tucson Fire Department spokesperson Captain Trish Tracy says six people were injured.  One person was trapped in the back of the vehicle and had to be extricated by TFD personnel.

An investigation is underway into the crash.

Captain Tracy says fire hydrants in the city are equipped with a cut-off device that prevents water from shooting into the air when the hydrant is damaged.
