Unclear how Utah man who went for swim in Northern Ariz. canyon diedPosted: Updated:
FLAGSTAFF, Ariz. – Detectives are trying to determine what killed a man who went for a swim in Havasupai Canyon and never resurfaced.
Gerry Blair, with the Coconino County Sheriff’s Office, says they received a report of a deceased individual in the area of Mooney Falls at the bottom of Havasupai Canyon on Wednesday at about 11:30 a.m.
Witnesses told sheriff’s deputies that 32-year-old Michael Allen, from Utah, was camping with friends and family when he went swimming in a pool at the top of Mooney Falls. He went underwater and never came up.
CCSO says Allen went over the Falls and traveled down about 200 feet. His body washed up on a bank about 50 to 100 yards from Mooney Falls.
It is unclear whether Allen became unconscious while in the pool for some reason or was hung up on debris underwater.
Detectives and sheriff’s deputies are continuing with their investigation.
