NOGALES, Ariz. -- U.S. Customs and Border Protection officers seized weapons and ammunition from a vehicle after a Mexican man tried to avoid a border checkpoint.
On June 23, CBP officers at the Mariposa Port of Entry were screening travelers headed into Mexico. The officers signaled a black Pontiac sedan to stop for inspection, but the driver ignored the officers and sped away toward Mexico.
Unable to drive past a barricade, the driver abandoned the vehicle and ran toward Mexico. Officers were able to stop the suspect and arrest him.
Officers found a significant amount of weapons and ammunition during a search of the vehicle, including 5,610 rounds of high-caliber ammunition, 10 AK-47 assault rifles, 70 AK-47 assault rifle magazines, six bayonets, and other weaponry and accessories.
The suspect was identified as a 49-year-old man from Sonora, Mexico. He was found to be in the United States without immigration documents.
CBP officers seized the weapons, ammunition and vehicle. The man was turned over to Immigration and Customs Enforcement for further investigation.
