Mom, 3 kids evacuated during early morning condo fire

PHOENIX -- Crews were called out to an early morning condo fire in the West Valley Monday morning.

It's believed that the fire started on the back patio of the single-story condo at 67th Avenue and Indian School Road.

Fire crews said it does not look like anybody was living in the condo.

"There wasn't any furniture in here, which is a pretty good indication that there are no occupants living here," said Capt. Rick Pearsall of the Phoenix Fire Department.

While nobody was officially living in the condo, firefighters said it's possible somebody might have been squatting there.

Crews were able to knock down the fire relatively quickly, but they did evacuate the unit next door -- and woman and her three children -- as a precaution.

"Any time we have a multi residence like this, where there's multiple families living there, any time there's a fire to an exposure, we have to go to the next residence and get an all-clear and make sure there's no fire extension there to keep them safe," Pearsall said.

That family has since been allowed back inside.

No injuries were reported. The condo was destroyed.

The cause of the fire is under investigation.
