Fire tears through vacant Mesa home

MESA, Ariz. -- Firefighter in Mesa had their hands full with a blaze at an abandoned home Thursday morning.

Crews were called out to Lindsay Road and Southern Avenue at about 8:30 a.m.

Firefighters said there was a large column of smoke and an active, working fire in the attic when they arrived.

"When they made entry they found smoke all the way to down their waists," said Forrest Smith, the public information officer for the Mesa Fire Department.

Crews searched the home and determined it was empty. Once they were sure there were no victims, they concentrated on knocking down the fire, which they managed to do fairly quickly.

One of the neighbors used his garden hose to try and protect his own home. "It was really hot. It was burning big time," he said.

Firefighters kept the flames from spreading to nearby homes.

No injuries were reported.
