AVONDALE, Ariz. -- Five people escaped an early morning fire that destroyed two mobile homes in Avondale Tuesday.

Firefighters were called out to Third Avenue just south of Western Avenue at about 5 a.m.

At least four people -- a mother and her three children -- were in one unit; one person was in the other. Everybody got out safety.

Firefighters from Avondale and Goodyear managed to keep the flames from spreading to other nearby units and douse the fire relatively quickly.

Once crews deal with any hot spots, investigators will try and determine what sparked the fire, which started with one trailer and then jumped to the second.

"We're not sure if this is going to be an arson or not," said Detective Reuben Gonzales of the Avondale Police Department. "We are treating this as a crimes scene, currently, until we can determine otherwise."

The mother who escaped with her kids said she believes the fire started outside, and police believe she's correct. Investigators say that is suspicious.

One of the units is a total loss. The other was badly damaged, but there are parts that might be salvageable.
