PHOENIX -- The Arizona Department of Public Safety says two people were killed Saturday morning and six others hurt when a pickup truck blew a tire and ran off Interstate 17 north of Phoenix.
DPS Sgt. Jim Haas says three young men in the back of the pickup and the driver were ejected. The group from the Phoenix area was on the way to a church retreat in Sedona.
Two of the men in the truck bed died and the third was seriously hurt. The dead were a 19-year-old and a 20-year-old.
Haas says the driver of the Dodge Dakota was the mother of at least two of the occupants and was seriously hurt.
The four passengers in the truck cab were less seriously injured. All six of the injured were flown to Phoenix area hospitals.
The wreck happened in the northbound lanes just before 10 a.m. just north of the Sunset Point rest area.
