Parents arrested after newborn dies from sexual attack, child abusePosted: Updated:
BULLHEAD CITY, Ariz. – A newborn died as a result of injuries suffered, allegedly at the hands of his parents, in what Bullhead City police call a brutal sexual assault.
Police were called to Western Arizona Regional Medical Center’s Emergency Room on Tuesday morning after receiving a call about a 1-month-old baby boy who was fighting for his life.
Doctors reportedly told detectives the baby had bruises and sores on his body and his eyes were red and swollen shut. The baby had also suffered broken ribs and a broken femur. He was malnourished and dehydrated and, according to doctors, showed signs of sexual abuse and shaken baby syndrome.
The newborn was taken by medical helicopter in critical condition to Sunrise Hospital in Las Vegas but died Wednesday morning.
The baby’s mother, 19-year-old Staci Lynn Barbosa, was taken into custody immediately after taking the boy to the hospital. Her boyfriend and the father of the child, 23-year-old Jonathan Edward Vandergriff, turned himself in to police.
A search warrant was served at their home where officers found marijuana and other items that can be used as evidence in this case.
The couple faces charges of molestation of a child, child abuse, aggravated assault and sexual conduct with a minor.
Bullhead City Police spokesperson Emily Montague says homicide charges are pending. Vandergriff and Barbosa are in the Mohave County jail in Kingman.
Vandergriff is being held on a $500,000 bond while Barbosa is being held on a $250,000 bond.
