Monsoon increases threat of urban brush fires during summerPosted: Updated:
PHOENIX – Tuesday is the first day of the monsoon and the chance of lightning increases the threat of fires this summer.
Dry weeds and brush throughout the valley have firefighters concerned. Winter rains caused vacant lots and fields to grow thicker with vegetation and now the warm weather has dried out those plants.
Over the weekend dozens of firefighters fought a brush fire near Glendale and 99th Avenues. Crews say flames quickly flared up because of the dry fuels.
Firefighters remind you to clear the brush up to 50 yards around your home in order to protect your property.
