Arizona teams practice water rescues for monsoon

PHOENIX (AP) — State police are hoping a weekend event will help remind the public of the dangers of crossing flooded roads and washes during Arizona's upcoming monsoon.

The Swift Water Rescue Rodeo will feature teams specially trained to rescue victims in fast-moving water. The teams will compete in numerous scenarios created to resemble actual rescue situations.

The event begins at 9 a.m. Saturday on the Salt River at Saguaro Lake Ranch.

State police say in past years, as many as 13 people have died in Arizona as a direct result of flash floods or fast-moving water. Countless others are rescued by specially trained teams like those competing in Saturday's event.

The monsoon usually begins in July and ends in September.
