EL MIRAGE, Ariz. – A man is in custody after two dogs were found by authorities without food, water or a place to rest in the shade.

Officers responded to the 22-year-old man’s home in the 11800 block of W. Port Royale Lane after receiving a call for an animal welfare check.

When police arrived, nobody was reportedly home but officers saw the dogs in the back of the home.

Both dogs were taken to an emergency animal hospital. Police in El Mirage say one dog was so sick he had to be euthanized.

The suspect, identified as Miguel Carrillo, got home hours after police had taken the dogs and admitted to owning the dogs and not caring for them.

He now faces two counts of animal cruelty.
