GLENDALE, Ariz. -- Glendale police detectives arrested a furniture store owner for fraudulent schemes and theft.

Augoustinos James Boukalis owned and operated The Sofa Shoppe at 59th Avenue and Bell Road in Glendale.

The store suddenly closed in May 2009 and many customers were left without their custom sofas after purchasing the furniture in full or making a down payment.

Most of the sofas were ordered several weeks prior to the store closing and were well past the expected delivery date, according to Glendale police spokeswoman Officer Karen Gerardo.

Prior to the store closing, many of the consumers attempted to get a refund from The Sofa Shoppe, but Boukalis reportedly refused to grant one.

Gerardo said 13 of those customers filed a complaint with the Attorney General's Office after Boukalis closed the store, leading to the fraud investigation.

Anyone who made a purchase at the store and did not receive their product should call the Glendale Police Department at 623-930-3217.
