AVONDALE, Ariz. - Avondale police have a man in custody accused of stabbing a father and son with a samurai sword during a fight at a home near Central Avenue and Main Street on Saturday night.

Santas Esquival Villanueva, 29, was booked Sunday into jail on charges of aggravated assault with a deadly weapon and other weapons charges.

The two victims are relatives of Villanueva's girlfriend.

Police were called to Dysart Road and Riley Drive on Saturday after the vehicle the girlfriend was driving the 34-year-old victim to the hospital in broke down.

The 34-year-old victim is listed in serious but stable condition.

The 56-year-old father was also stabbed in the incident and treated and released from the hospital.

The police report indicated that the 34 and 56-year-old victims were most likely trying to protect Villanueva's girlfriend, who happened to be their niece.

Neighbors told police, Villanueva and his girlfriend had domestic violence issues in the past.

Villanueva was asleep inside the home and taken in custody for the assault. Villanueva has a history of felony convictions for burglary, assault and drug charges.

Villanueva's girlfriend was also arrested on an outstanding warrant.
