Fires around Tucson ThursdayPosted: Updated:
A house fire near Stella and Wilmot started around 12:30 Thursday afternoon. They say the fire started because of someone burning weeds with a propane torch. A shed and two cars caught fire, as well as a few other items.
An elderly woman, a man and his two dogs have been forced to leave their homes because of smoke damage. Firefighters say this is the second fire this year started after someone was burning weeds with a torch.
Another fire Thursday damaged a midtown resale and consignment store. Employees at the "Twice as Nice" on Broadway near Alvernon called 911 after spotting smoke coming from the ceiling. There were no injuries. Investigators say faulty wiring near a light ignited the blaze.
There was also a mobile home fire in Marana, off I-10 north of Tangerine. Flames charred one room, smoke damaged the rest. The residents called 911 when they returned home to find smoke coming from the roof. One man suffered chest pains and heat caused one firefighter to seek medical attention. Investigators traced the cause to a short in a paper shredder the homeowners left plugged in.
