Man accused of impersonating officer and pulling over Mesa driver

MESA – A man was arrested for allegedly posing as a police officer and pulling over a driver in Mesa.

Nikolay C. Abbott was taken into custody for reportedly pulling over a car for going through a red light near Ellsworth and McKellips and letting the driver off with a warning.

Police in Mesa say Abbott was wearing a baseball cap that read “Police” and a duty belt that looks like one an officer may wear. The suspect reportedly asked for the driver’s license and registration while conducting the false traffic stop and asked that the driver and occupants not leave the scene.

The driver of the car later identified the suspect from a photo line-up. Police say they had a run-in with Abbott on May 14 where they found a duty belt, baseball hat and stolen police-like radios.
