1-Cent sales tax increase takes effect TuesdayPosted: Updated:
PHOENIX -- Tuesday marks the first day that Arizona will collect a temporary sales tax increase that was overwhelmingly approved by voters two weeks ago.
The 1-cent, three-year increase was put on the May 18 ballot by the Republican-led Legislature at the behest of Gov. Jan Brewer.
Sixty-four percent of people who voted in the special election supported the tax. Thirty-six percent opposed it.
The increase is aimed at averting deeper cuts in education and other public services.
It's estimated to produce $1 billion annually to reduce big shortfalls projected in the state's budget for the next several years.
