CHANDLER -- Two people were hurt when a small single-engine plane crashed while trying to land at Chandler Municipal Airport Wednesday morning.

Those two people were able to get out of the plane before it caught fire although one of them did suffer some burns. Both people were taken to the hospital.

The plane was in the process of landing when it crashed.

According to Battalion Chief Paul Nies of the Chandler Fire Department, the 1996 Piper Archer had just taken off when the cockpit started to fill with smoke. The pilot turned around to make an emergency landing.

Nies said the plane was not lined up with the runway and hit the dirt and skidded across a taxiway.

Firefighters were able to quickly control the fire.

It's not yet known what went wrong with the plane. The FAA will investigate.
