Travel Time: Family fun under the Hawaiian sun

Posted: Updated:

It's one of the most popular destinations for Arizona families looking to get away for their summer vacation - and why not? There are so many great things to do in Hawaii!
We're lucky here in our neck of the woods - it's a snap to get to the islands! We've got daily non-stops to Oahu, Maui, Kauai and the Big Island of Hawaii, to say nothing of the other airlines offering easy connecting service through Los Angeles, San Francisco, Salt Lake City and more.
Tour companies offer excellent "package" rates for Hawaii, offering terrific discounts when you book air, car and accommodations together, too. With the balmy breezes and beautiful beaches, there's no reason not to pack your bags and go!
And you'll find so many things for your family to do:
Often the first island visited, there are tons of things to do here!
Pearl Harbor/Arizona Memorial/USS Missouri - Extremely popular for visitors of all ages! Tickets for the boat to the USS Arizona Memorial are given out on a first come, first served basis, and sometimes in the summer, you may arrive in the afternoon to find the days tickets already gone. If you can head here before lunch, you'll have a better chance of reserving your spot!
Dole Pineapple Plantation and Maze - Lots of fun for kids of all ages! It's a beautiful and interesting tour, too.
Waikiki Beach - Right in the heart of the hotel zone, you'll find one heck of a beautiful beach!
Polynesian Cultural Center - Has an amazing luau, plus really fun and interesting exhibits about how other Pacific Islanders live! It's a pretty ride to get there, too.
Bishop Museum
- The Hawaiian Hall is newly renovated and there are lots of other terrific things to see here, too!
My personal favorite of the Hawaiian Islands, I love Maui because if you want to do something different every day you can, but if you want to do nothing but lay on a gorgeous beach every day - you can do that, too!
Snorkeling - Lots of great places to do this here! Honolua Bay and Black Rock are two of my favorite places, but Molokini and Kapalua Bay are also very popular!
Zip line excursions - Two places to do this on Maui: the lower slopes of Haleakula and a new course over in West Maui, above Ka'anapali!
Bicycle the Volcano - One of my best visits to Maui included a sunrise high atop dormant volcano Haleakula, followed by a downhill ride through some of the most beautiful parts of Upcountry Maui, with amazing scenery! You can't do this with little ones - you have to be at least 12 years of age to participate.
Hula Lessons - Offered daily at the Whaler's Village Shopping Center in Ka'anapali. And here's the best part - they're free!
Maui Ocean Center - A great place to spend a rainy afternoon, this marine center has some beautiful exhibits!
Sometimes thought of as more of a honeymoon destination, you'll find lots of things for families here, too!
Waimea Canyon - Often called Hawaii's Grand Canyon, it's a beautiful place to enjoy scenic views!
Na Pali Coast hiking - Some of the most beautiful parts of this beautiful island can't be reached by car. Put on your walking shoes and hit the trails!
Snorkeling - Great places to see our fishy friends here, too: Poipu Beach and Hanalei Bay are two of my favorites!
Helicopter sightseeing - Another terrific way to see all the things you can't see from a road!
Zipline - New 1800-foot zipline tour takes you above Kauai forests!

Ruggedly beautiful, the Big Island has a lot to offer!
- Some of the best snorkeling I've ever done was done here, right by the Keauhou Beach Resort. I don't know what they put in the water here, but between the sea turtles swimming right up to you, along with the Moorish Idols and Butterfly Fish swimming in schools of seven or eight, I would have to think long and hard to come up with a more beautiful place to snorkel!
Volcanoes National Park - A beautiful three hour drive from Kailua-Kona, Volcanoes National Park is a must-see! And bring a sweatshirt - believe it or not, you'll need it!
Zipline - The World Botanical Garden just added a zipline course. Spectacular scenery awaits!
Dolphin Quest - Located at the Hilton Waikoloa, the folks behind this popular "swim with dolphins" excursion are offering a brand new show on Tuesdays - and it's free!
Kailua-Kona - A fun and funky town, Kailua-Kona is a great place to wander around in search of everything from shave ice to t-shirts!
And if you want to head over to Hawaii, you can still get some terrific values for summer!
All the packages below include round trip air from Phoenix, six nights accommodation as noted, airport transfers for Oahu and a rental car for Maui, Kauai and the Big Island. Midweek travel offers the best airfares, but you can travel weekend to weekend for a higher rate.
