Border agents continue search for up to 60 illegal immigrants lost in desertPosted: Updated:
PHOENIX - The search was called off by Maricopa County sheriff's deputies for an estimated 60 people who have reportedly been stranded in the desert for more than a week.
Maricopa County sheriff's deputies have found one illegal immigrant and used an MCSO helicopter to look for 60 others, including women and children but never found anyone and called of their search at about 5 p.m.
Deputies say they received a call from a man who said he was lost in the desert. The cell phone call was traced to the area near Interstate 8 and Butterfield Road.
Border agents took over the investigation at 5 p.m. An MCSO spokesperson says that area is heavily used by drug cartels and human smugglers.
