Arpaio offers deal to jailed illegal immigrantsPosted: Updated:
PHOENIX -- Maricopa County Sheriff Joe Arpaio has a new plan to help jailed illegal immigrants serve their sentences in record time, but it involves some hard work.
The deal came about due to a shortage of volunteers to wash dishes and do the laundry.
"I'm not about to go hire employees at taxpayers' expense," Arpaio said. "Why not have the inmates volunteer to clean clothes and dishes?"
Arpaio said he is giving them a two-for-one deal, shortening their sentences for volunteering to work. He will credit anyone who volunteers with two days served for every day in jail.
"When they're done with the sentence they can go back to the country that they came from with deportation," he said.
The two-for-one deal is for illegal immigrants in his jail now and anyone arrested under the state's new immigration law, SB 1070.
