Baby boy is Phoenix's first pediatric heart transplant patient

PHOENIX – For the first time ever Phoenix doctors have performed heart transplant surgery on an infant.

Six-month-old Kaiden was born with severe heart defects. He had the transplant surgery at St. Joseph's Hospital three weeks ago and, according to doctors, it saved the baby’s life.

Marissa Hermosillo, Kaiden, mom, says, “It's just an overwhelming feeling of happiness and sadness because a life did have to be lost in order for Kaiden to get such a wonderful gift and we're so grateful and thankful that the donor family chose to donate and give Kaiden an opportunity to live."

Kaiden will be taking medication for the rest of his life but the surgery was a success and his mom says it is the perfect gift for her very first Mother’s Day.
