18TH ANNUAL NATIONAL ASSOCIATION OF LETTER CARRIERS "STAMP OUT HUNGER" VALLEY-WIDE FOOD DRIVE
Saturday, May 8
Visit www.vsuw.org for more information.
Donate online at www.stampouthungeraz.org to benefit St. Mary's Food Bank Alliance, St. Vincent de Paul and the United Food Bank.
Hunger continues to be a vital concern across the state. The economic downturn has Valley residents turning to local food banks for food assistance.
According to the Arizona Association of Food Banks, area food banks report up to 50 percent increase in requests for emergency food boxes.
Each year, food bank donations decrease during summer months while demand for food assistance increases
This food drive is the largest one-day food drive to support local food banks - food banks depend on donations from the letter carriers food drive every year.
Today, letter carriers across the Valley will be in neighborhoods picking up non-perishable food items at the same time they pick up outgoing mail.
City and rural carriers delivered grocery bags to residents' mailboxes this past week, and residents are asked to fill the bag with non-perishable food items and leave the bag next to their mailbox.
A full bag weighing 12 pounds can provide approximately 8 meals to someone in need.
All donations will be delivered to local food banks - St. Mary's Food Bank Alliance, St. Vincent de Paul and the United Food Bank.
A $10 donation can feed a family of four for three days.
BONNIE MOEHLE, SELF REALIZATION COACH
Topic of Segment: Multi Tasking Mothers Can Still Maintain Peace and Joy.
Bonnie Moehle, Self Realization Coach and author of "What is Happiness and Where Can I Get Some?"
1. As mothers, we often feel stress because of the high expectations we place on ourselves and our families, and the judgments we make when those expectations are not met.
2. We worry because we believe that it will serve a positive purpose (it shows I care). In reality worry makes us sick, takes away our clarity and makes it difficult to see real solutions. In addition it dis-empowers the people we are worrying about because it sends the message that they need to be worried about.
3. We feel overwhelmed because we are anticipating a failure to complete everything on our list. The best thing we can do is to prioritize the list and do each task peacefully. If some things don't get done, we need to stay kind and gentle with ourselves.
4. Mothers tend to say yes to more than they can handle. Be very honest with yourself and others about what you are truly capable of doing… and don't feel guilty if you have to say no.
5. Make some time, even if it's 5 minutes a couple times a day to nurture yourself in some way.

For the last two years, Cassidy Osborne, 17, hasn't had a mother. When Cassidy was 15, she lost her mother to breast cancer-a mere two years after Michele Osborne was diagnosed.
Now a junior at the University of Arizona, Cassidy honors her mother's legacy by participating in the Susan G. Komen 3-Day for the Cure. She'll be serving as a volunteer crew member at the Komen Boston 3-Day for the Cure (July 23-25), and walking in the three-day, 60-mile event in Arizona (November 12-14). She also walked in the Arizona 3-Day for the Cure in 2008.
Cassidy has three siblings. Younger sister, McKenna, may be accompanying Cassidy. Her brother, 14-year-old Grayson, is too young to participate and older sister Kelsey is busy applying to law school. And dad-dad enjoys being a cheerleader to all of the 3-Day for the Cure walkers. But Cassidy doesn't mind if she's the only Osborne on the route; she's committed to fighting the breast cancer fight and honoring her mom.
