Pilot killed in plane crash near YumaPosted: Updated:
YUMA -- A pilot was killed when his small plane crashed in a field near Yuma Thursday morning.
At approximately 5:45 a.m., the Yuma County Sheriff's Office received a call of a potential plane crash near Somerton Avenue and County 12th Street.
Sheriff's deputies arrived and found a single-engine Cessna that had crashed in an agricultural field.
According to YCSO spokesman Capt. Eben Bratcher, one occupant, presumed to be the pilot, was found dead at the scene. The victim has been identified as Travis Perkins, 27, of Flower Mound, Texas.
The cause of the crash is unknown at this time. The National Transportation Safety Board is en route to Yuma to investigate the crash.
