Glendale toddler critical after near drowningPosted: Updated:
GLENDALE -- A Glendale toddler is in critical condition after he was found in his family's backyard swimming pool.
Investigators say a10-year-old and a 12-year-old were babysitting the 16-month-old boy Sunday afternoon at the child's home near 43rd and Maryland avenues. The toddler's father was home, but he was aslee.
The toddler vanished. He was found about 15 minutes later in the pool. It's not known exactly how long he was in the water.
There was a partial fence around the pool, but police said it did not provide much in the way of protection.
"There's a sliding glass door off the master bedroom, and there's also a bathroom door off the master bath that go to the back yard," said Sgt. Scott Walker of the Glendale Police Department. "Those areas aren't covered by a pool fence."
This is Glendale's first drowning incident this year.
