Peace Officers Memorial Service planned to honor fallen officersPosted: Updated:
PHOENIX - It's the first of May, which each year means Arizona holds the annual Peace Officers Memorial Service. Over the next few days cities around the Phoenix-metro will be holding Peace Officer's Memorial events to honor fallen officers.
Attorney General Terry Goddard will host events May 1-3 to honor Officer Chris Marano of the Arizona Department of Public Safety, Lieutenant Eric Shuhandler of the Gilbert Police Department and Officer Davis Wayne Johnson of the Phoenix Police Department.
These events include the ninth annual Charity Golf Tournament at Silverado Golf Club on Saturday. Then on Sunday, the annual Peach Officer' Memorial Run/Walk with pre-run events starting at 7 a.m. at Wesley Bolin Memorial Plaza.
Proceeds from both events will benefit the Arizona Police Officers Memorial Service and the upkeep of the memorial monument.
Then on Monday evening at 6 p.m a service will be held to commemorate Arizona Peace Officers Memorial Day and commences Arizona Peace Officers' Memorial Week honoring officers killed in the line of duty.
Also on Monday, Mesa Police Department is hosting a time of remembrance at their headquarters at 130 N. Robson.
"The Mesa Police Department recognizes Town Marshal Hyrum Smith Peterson and Officer Steven Paul Pollard for their courage, strength, and commitment to the citizens of Mesa," the department said in a statement. "Officer Steven Pollard was killed in the line of duty on November 27, 1994, when he was struck by a vehicle during a traffic stop. Marshal Hyrum Smith Peterson was killed in the line of duty on November 12, 1913. He was shot by a theft suspect that he had witnessed trying to steal a bicycle. Peterson gave chase and caught the suspects at the edge of town when he was shot and killed."
The golf tournament is already, full but the 5K run and memorial events in Mesa and Phoenix are open to the public.
