TUCSON – An Arizona sheriff had some tough words against the law on Wednesday.
Pima County Sheriff Clarence Dupnik went on the record denouncing Senate Bill 1070.
He says law enforcement never asked the legislature for the law and says he fears the consequences if it is enforced.
Sheriff Dupnik says, “What they've done in the process of giving us this… new law has put us in a ‘damned if we do and damned if we don't’ situation when it comes to civil suits."
Sheriff Dupnik also says, “If any citizen thinks that you're not enforcing the law, they can sue you and we are already in a position to get sued and I know they've already sued sheriffs in other parts of this state for profiling."
Sheriff Dupnik says he will refuse to enforce the law if it goes into effect.
