Sherry Sass, Friends of the Santa Cruz River, says even a state-of-the-art sewage treatment plant has limitations on what it can properly handle, and thus her group continues to seek ways to improve the quality of the River.  She says an experimental bio-diesel plant is converting discarded cooking oil from Sonoran restaurants into energy.  She says improper human waste disposal in Sonora is also being addressed with a composting toilet project which will convert the waste into valuable compost.
