TEMPE -- Tempe police arrested a driver after he reportedly collided with a motorcycle and fled the scene.

According to the Tempe Police Department, a red Toyota car driven by Michael George Markulin, 24, was approaching the intersection of University Drive and State Route 143 at approximately 2:30 a.m. Saturday when it collided with the rear of a motorcycle that was stopped at the intersection for a red light.

As a result of the collision, the motorcyclist's leg was severed just below the knee.

Markulin fled on foot.

A preliminary investigation revealed that Markulin was traveling in excess of 60 mph when he struck the motorcycle. According to police, witnesses indicated that Markulin showed signs of alcohol impairment.

Tempe police traffic investigators contacted Markulin at his Phoenix home within hours of the collision. Markulin reportedly admitted he was driving when the collision occurred and that he left the scene without rendering aid to the injured motorcyclist.

Markulin also informed investigators that he had no intention of contacting police to report the collision.

Markulin was booked into Tempe City Jail and faces felony charges of failing to remain at the scene of a serious injury collision and aggravated assault.

The investigation is continuing.
