Police: Phoenix man shoots, kills neighbor in garagePosted: Updated:
PHOENIX -- Phoenix police say a 47-year-old man was killed inside his garage by a neighbor Sunday afternoon.
According to Phoenix police, Lincoln Brevard was working in the garage at his home near 91st Avenue and Lower Buckeye Road when a neighbor, Xavier Jauregui, 25, asked to see the inside of his home to view the floor plan. Brevard refused.
Brevard went inside his home and told his wife about the incident because he was concerned about Jauregui's odd behavior, according to Phoenix police Detective James Holmes. She and two of their children left the home for church, leaving Brevard and his 13-year-old daughter in the house.
At approximately 12:30 p.m., Phoenix police officers responded to a shooting at the home. Officers found Brevard lying on the floor of his garage, suffering from a head injury. Brevard was treated by Phoenix Fire paramedics, but he was pronounced dead at the scene.
Investigators learned Jauregui had returned to Brevard's home and an altercation may have ensued, resulting in Jauregui shooting the victim. Jauregui then returned to his home, told his brother that he was leaving the state, and left in his Dodge pickup truck.
The brother, concerned about Jauregui's behavior and knowing there had been an earlier altercation with the neighbor, called police to check on Brevard. The brother told police he thought he had heard a gunshot just before Jauregui returned home.
Detectives were able to establish telephone contact with Jauregui and after about three hours of negotiation, were able to take him into custody near Bethany Home Road and 75th Avenue.
Holmes said Brevard's daughter had been in her bedroom at the time of the shooting and had no knowledge of the incident until police arrived on the scene.
The investigation is continuing.
