Travel Time: Insure your next vacation

Posted: Updated:

Lost luggage, a long flight delay - heck, even the weather. There are so many things that can disrupt your vacation, causing levels of anxiety that range from "no biggie" to "holy cow!" And if that volcano in Iceland tells us nothing else, it's that we need to prepare for anything. That's where travel insurance comes in.
Long available through cruise lines and tour companies, trip cancellation and interruption insurance refunds your trip price - minus the premium you pay - if your trip is cancelled or interrupted for a wide variety of reasons. Premiums will vary widely from company to company, with the tour company and cruise lines offering a flat rate for specific coverage. Independent insurance companies typically base your premium on the cost of the trip and your age.
Under the heading of "Trip Cancellation," most insurance companies will cover you if you can't travel due to illness - your illness or that of your traveling companions. Others will cover you if you are called to military service or jury duty. Still others offer a "cancel for business reasons" or "cancel for any reason" option, but it will cost more.
"Trip Interruption" is a pretty broad term and you may be surprised at what else a policy may cover - labor unrest, lost or delayed luggage, natural disasters (like volcanoes) and emergency medical expenses.
But what may be the most important part of your travel insurance policy? Medical coverage. Twist an ankle exploring those Mayan ruins? Develop a sinus infection on the flight to Amsterdam? If you need medical assistance while out of the country, keep in mind your personal medical insurance may not cover you outside the United States. A policy that covers doctor visits and medication in other countries can be invaluable.
Who should buy trip cancellation insurance? These days, I say everyone, but particularly travelers with small children and ill or elderly relatives. My daughter broke her arm walking down the stairs at the movie theatre a few years back - you just never know what will pop up with little ones, before or during a trip.
And as for elderly relatives, I became a trip insurance devotee when my much-loved grandmother passed away just two days before I was to sail out of Miami on a Caribbean cruise. Scrambling to make arrangements to attend the funeral and catch up with the cruise ship, I learned a valuable - if very expensive - lesson.
Just as with auto and homeowners insurance, not all travel insurance companies are alike in quality and coverage - make sure you see what is covered before you pay your premium. If you're living with a long-term or chronic illness, pre-existing conditions may also be an issue for you. CSA Travel Protection, a company I've used on behalf of my clients for years, asks if major medication has changed in the past six months, or if the passenger has been hospitalized in that same time period. If so, that's considered a pre-existing condition and you'll need to purchase additional coverage.
CSA and Travel Insured International - another company I've used with great success - both have excellent websites that spell out what is covered and more importantly - what isn't. You can also get a rough idea of what a policy will set you back. Airlines are so strict with their cancellation penalties these days, and some discounted tour packages are completely non-refundable within 30 days of travel. With everyone watching their wallets these days, it pays to protect your vacation investment.
And on to the fun stuff…
