CHANDLER -- Two women were critically injured in a crash between a semi-truck and a minivan at a Chandler intersection Wednesday.

According to Chandler police Sgt. Joe Favazzo, a minivan made a left-hand turn in front of a semi at Ray and Alma School roads. The semi hit the van, pushing it into traffic, and then veered off the road, striking a power box and hitting a wall.

Favazzo said one of the truck's fuel tanks hit the electrical box, causing explosions and knocking out traffic lights and power in the area.

Favazzo said the driver of the truck was able to get out of the vehicle and get to safety before the fire and explosions occurred. He received some minor injuries.

The two women in the minivan were airlifted to area hospitals. Favazzo said they are listed in critical condition.
