PRESCOTT VALLEY -- Police officers responding to a physical domestic violence call in Prescott Valley on Saturday fatally shot a 54-year-old man.
Prescott Valley police officers responded to a residence in the 5200 block of Stetson Drive at approximately 4:15 p.m. and tried to make contact with the suspect, who has now been identified as Donald Frank Smith, inside the home with no results.
According to police spokesman Sgt. Art Askew, approximately 20 minutes after officers arrived, Smith confronted them with a knife and was shot by the officers, who reportedly were in fear for their lives.
Officers then immediately rendered aid to the suspect and requested medical response.
Fire and medical personnel responded to the residence to treat Smith for his injuries. He was then flown to Flagstaff Medical Center where he later died.
The officers involved in the incident have been identified as Sgt. Jackson, Officer O'Hagan and Officer Payne. Jackson has been in law enforcement for approximately 11 years, O'Hagan for approximately five years and Payne for approximately nine years.
Askew said all three officers were placed on administrative leave, which is per policy.
The Department of Public Safety is continuing with the investigation.
