FLAGSTAFF -- A Flagstaff police officer was arrested after he allegedly hit his girlfriend in the face while attending Country Thunder Wednesday night.
According to Flagstaff police Lt. Ken Koch, Officer Shawn Gilleland was off duty while attending the concert event Country Thunder near Florence with his girlfriend and other off-duty police officers.
Gilleland allegedly became angry with his girlfriend and hit her once in the face, according to Koch. Gilleland reportedly also struck another off-duty officer, but no charges were filed.
Fellow officers witnessed the assault and separated Gilleland from the group.
Pinal County sheriff's deputies responded to the scene and Gilleland was taken into custody. He was booked into the Pinal County Jail for one count of misdemeanor domestic violence assault.
Gilleland has been placed on paid administrative leave pending the outcome of both an internal investigation by the Flagstaff Police Department and a criminal investigation by the Pinal County Sheriff's Office.
"We as an organization are embarrassed by this incident and consider this a major violation of public trust and professional conduct," Koch said in a news release. "The Flagstaff Police Department will take appropriate administrative action upon completion of a thorough investigation.
