PHOENIX -- Phoenix police are investigating an early morning officer-involved shooting.

It happened at about 5 a.m. at the Circle K at 67th Avenue and Thomas Road. That intersection is closed. But that's not the only scene related to this incident. The investigation spans several miles.

It started about 30 minutes earlier with an armed robbery at another Circle K at 83rd Avenue and Indian School Road. In addition to robbing the store, the suspect also stole the clerk's car.

The suspect took off , but police spotted him a just a few minutes later. There was a short chase that came to an end at the Circle K when the suspect apparent lost control of the vehicle.

The car plowed into some bushes, flattening a front tire and causing the air bag to deploy.

Police said the suspect got out of the car and pulled a gun.

"At some point during all of this, obviously our officers felt like they were in danger," said Sgt. Trent Crump of the Phoenix Police Department.

Crump said at least officer fired a shot.

The suspect was hit, possibly in the back. According to the Phoenix Fire Department, that person, identified as Paul D. Koleda, 34, was taken to St. Joseph's Hospital where he is listed in serious condition.

The officers involved in the incident were not hurt.

Several police cars and dozens of officers and detectives were called out to the scene of the shooting.

The officer who fired will be placed on administrative leave, which is standard procedure in this kind of situation.
